Christmas Bird Count Results

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is an annual event that takes place throughout North, Central and South America between mid-December and early January.  Each count takes place during a single calendar day and covers the area within a circle measuring 24 kilometers in diameter. In addition to the formal Audubon Christmas Bird Counts conducted in Timiskaming District each year, the Kirkland Lake Nature Club has conducted a very similar annual count since 1952.  It is conducted in the same manner as an Audubon count, but because they do not confine the count to the inside of a circle 24 kilometers in diameter, the results are considered non-standard, and therefore not accepted by the Audubon Society.  Count results were generally compiled from not only Kirkland Lake, but also from Larder Lake, Virginiatown, and sometimes Matachewan. Essentially, current members of the Kirkland Lake Nature Club each counted their local area, so the area of coverage for this count varies with the membership of the club and where they each lived. 

This count was almost always done on Christmas day, or, especially in later years, on Boxing Day. An inspection of the number of observers and Total Party Hours reveals that effort varied widely over the years surveyed. Nevertheless, it is the longest continuously running winter bird survey in Timiskaming District, and has great value in providing some historical context to the early winter bird picture in Timiskaming. During the span of 48 years, only 1980 and 1984 were missed. Unfortunately the club dissolved early in this century due to lack of membership, and the last Christmas count on record for the club is for the year 2000.

Conspicuous from the results of this count is the lack, over an almost 50 year period, of occurrences of Goldfinch, Rough-legged Hawk, Horned Lark, Brown Creeper, and Lapland Longspur. Pigeons were recorded on the count only once, in 1998. On the other hand, there have been several surprises over the years, including Belted Kingfisher appearing twice, and the numbers of Mallard and Black Ducks consistently counted in the latter years of the count. A lingering Northern Goshawk in 1995, and again in 1998, is also noteworthy. In 1972, a very late Song Sparrow was also recorded.
