The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is an annual event that takes place throughout North, Central and South America between mid-December and early January. Each count takes place during a single calendar day and covers the area within a circle measuring 24 kilometers in diameter. The birders are often out from dawn to dusk recording not only the different species seen, but also the number of individuals of each species. It is, in effect, the closest we come to a annual continental census of birds.
You do not have to be an expert birder to take part. Simply having another pair of eyes in the group invariably leads to more birds being found and counted. You can also participate as a feeder watcher. If you can devote a couple of hours on count day to watching your feeder, your results can be included if your feeder is within the count circle.
The count results are submitted to the National Audubon Society, which supervises the counts and publishes the results in their journal American Birds. In Canada, the count is conducted through Bird Studies Canada. This data, collected over a long period of time, can provide valuable information on the relative abundance and distribution of birds. For more information on how the counts are conducted, visit the Bird Studies Canada CBC page or the Audubon CBC web site.
There have been four official count circles in Timiskaming District where Christmas Bird Counts have been conducted. The original circle was centered on New Liskeard, and ran from 1987 to 1991, with one early count having occurred in 1950. In 1992, the center of the count circle moved to Haileybury, and, with the exception of 1999, has occurred there every year since. This New Liskeard / Haileybury count is the main count for the area, though participation has declined in recent years.
In addition, there have been two supplemental count circles that have been added recently. One centered on Mountain Chutes, just south of Hwy. 65 between New Liskeard and Elk Lake, has run every year from 2000 to present. A second, centered at Hilliardton Marsh, has run annually from 2002 to present.
The
tables below show the raw count results for all counts that have occurred in
Timiskaming District.
